Fishing Seasons and Calendar of Big Game Sportfish in Puerto Rico !

  • wahoo fishing in January off the west coast of PR fishing tours

    January

    Wahoo - Tuna - King - Sailfish - Tarpon

Swordfish are the big game species to target now. With the start of the new year Wahoo begin to show up. While they are here year-round they become much more prevalent. We target these hard hitting fish by trolling humps and ledges with a variety of lures, often on downriggers. Sailfish, Tuna, and large Kings are often mixed in this time of year.

  • Mahi Mahi, dorado, or dolphin. This fish goes by a lot of names however it all taste amazing when grilled

    February

Swordfish - Wahoo - Mahi - Yellowfin Tuna - King Mackerel - Tarpon - Blackfin Tuna

What a great month to be a Charter Captain. Marlin were on fire during Feb. of 2024. Wahoo are generally still the main target we do start to see the frist migration of the Mahi in the south. These fish are often “gaffer” size, ranging from 10-60 lb. While ledges and humps always produce good fishing, weed lines are often targeted for Mahi. Expect to see the occasional Yellowfin tuna mixed in too. This is also a great time to start looking for the larger Swordfish to start migrating through !

    March

    Wahoo - Mahi - King Mackerel - Tuna - Tarpon - Swordfish

March offers much of the same fishing as February with a bit more focus on Mahi. For the more patient fishermen this is the time to put the hours in the deep water for Swordfish! We target these fish in 1600 foot of water and we look for a bite or two a day, but the reward is great.

    April

The Mahi are still here with the migration in the South. We will still sometimes fish out of Parguera and Cabo Rojo to get to the best offshore fishing. Wahoo, KIng, and Blackfin are always present often mixed in with the Mahi on weedlines. This is a great time of year to fish the larger ballyhoo schools. We always stop to fish if we see increased numbers flying out from under the boat as gaffer size Mahi should be present. With the cooler water and the right client this is a great time to drop deep for swordfish.

    May

On the Southern Coast of Puerto Rico the Mahi are should be around for those wiling to put in the miles required to find them. Yellowfin Tuna and Blackfin are on the targe list when fishing for palegics. This is lso a great time to jig for grouper and Snappers. We often have a good mixed bag this time of year in P.R..

  • June

June has several great opoutunities to explore when fishing in Puerto Rico. As always, good populations of Skipjack and Blackfin Tuna can be found around the island. Fishing this time of year is also a great time to catch "Smoker King Mackeral" These Mackerel move into the edge of the reefs and are great fun on light tackle. Some Mahi can be caught now too.

  • Lure fishing Puerto Rico. Bring the big ones in your spread then feed them a ballyhoo

    July

July offers a good variety of big game fishing. Blue Marlin are showing up, Blackfin Tuna are thick, White Marlin, and Kingfish are the sought after species.

    August

Blue Marlin Fishing is hot! After the long wait of spring it’s time to switch gears. With the onset of the first full moon our fishing spread changes to mostly hard marlin lures. Let’s catch a grander! Blackfin Tuna and Mahi are here for the meat fishing and, in turn, the Blue Marlin are feeding on them.

    September

Blue Marlin! You can always convince us otherwise as there is plenty of game fish around too. Click here to read Marlin Magazine’s articles about it. We generally fish heavy 200 lb tackle as we are fishing for granders !

    October

Fishing offshore Puerto Rico in October brings several big game species into the spread. We focus on bailer size Mahi on weedlines, King Mackerel, and Wahoo when meat fishing. That said, Blue Marlin fishing is still a strong option for us and a sailfish can be commonly caught while Mahi fishing.

    November

As the temperatures slowly start to cool, the fishing does not. There should be plenty of Kings, Sailfish, and Tuna around. A good current causing upwelling on the many ridges will stack the bait up. Live bait and small ballyhoo should do the trick. O yeah, Blue Marline are here!

    December

December fishing in Puerto Rico is very similar to November with a few more Wahoo around. Wahoo sashimi is amazing if you have never tried it.
